Yesterday, I witnessed the death of a broken dog. Many very vocal people had given up on him; many of us had not. The die was cast. The entire story was never told or understood. July 24 will always be Razor’s Day. He was no saint but he brought out the worst and best in a lot of people who love animals. This site is in memory of Razor, those who loved and fought for him and those who love and fight for broken dogs everywhere, everyday.
What is a “broken dog?” A broken dog is one who is outside the norm of adoptability by most people looking for that perfect dog. A broken dog may have a physical disability or loss (blindness, loss of leg, etc.), medical conditions needing regular intervention (skin conditions, epilepsy, IVDD, etc.) and/or those with behavior problems not easily addressed by the lay person looking for a dog (inconsistent behavior toward other dogs, cats and animals; timid, shy dogs; fear based behavior, etc.) and senior dogs, of whom too many adopters do not appreciate what they have to bring to a new home. To me, “brokenness” in a dog or person is mostly due to the perception of others: “in the eye of the beholder.”
Dogs who are truly aggressive toward humans, who have been properly assessed and deemed unadoptable due to human aggression are best served by humane euthanasia. Razor had inconsistent behavior toward other dogs but was NOT human aggressive, may he rest in peace.
I invite anyone to submit a broken dog for listing, looking for a forever home for her. I expect and demand absolute honesty in your assessment of the brokenness of your dog - adopters and your dogs will be depending on you.
